Pentecost is Coming: How to Prepare for a Fresh Outpouring

Pentecost is coming, and our hearts are expectant. We’re yearning for a fresh outpouring of the holy spirit. What has been barren within us will come to life. But for us to fully embrace the gift of Pentecost, we must prepare our hearts and souls just like the disciples in the upper room who, with one accord, devoted themselves to prayer (Acts 2:14).

Familiarise yourself with the Feast of Pentecost: Can you anticipate something you don’t understand? It’s not possible. Pour your heart into the book of Acts of the Apostles, and let our Lord teach you. With knowledge of what the church is eagerly waiting for, you can open your heart for the same.

Prepare genuinely for confession: The sacrament of confession is the gateway to the graces lost in sin. Examine your conscience, going through the 10 commandments. Write down your sins if you have to, and do a thorough confession. There’s no sin too shameful or big to be forgiven. Get it all out.

Participate in the Holy Spirit novena: The nine-day grand novena to the Holy Spirit is yet another great way to prepare your soul to receive the Spirit of God. It would be great to join your church or a small christian community for this purpose. If that’s not possible, do it alone. Don’t just say the prayer. Take time to reflect. Let it reveal what the Holy Spirit want of you in this season.

Spend time in adoration: You don’t have to wait for Thursday to go for the holy hour. Spend time with our Lord in the blessed sacrament often. There’s a peace that is incomparable when you spend time in adoration. It’s a powerful time of grace, drawing you closer to Jesus, deepening your faith, and offering intercession for others.

Have an expectant heart: Instead of worrying about the impartation you’ll receive or whether you’ll receive anything at all, open your heart! God knows what you need for your mission better than you. Let this prayer: “Come, Holy Spirit come”, be your go-to whenever your mind pushes you to overthink.
