God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness, freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. (CCC Paragraph 1)
Suppose the goal of life was to get an education, land a job, marry the perfect spouse, start a family and raise well-disciplined children who go on to become lawyers, priests, teachers, tech gurus and experts in different fields—the best this world has ever seen. You live in a beautiful suburb, retire by the beach and enjoy your sunset years in comfort.
Don’t you think that—even with all that—it would be pointless? Because when you die, all those achievements stay behind. Your family may enjoy them, and the world may applaud you. But you—where will you be? What will you have gained if you leave everything you worked for behind?
You weren't put on earth to be remembered. You were put here to prepare for eternity -Rick Warren.
Even if you were someone as celebrated as Nelson Mandela or Wangari Mathai, leaving behind a legacy that’s honoured every year, what value does it hold for you when you’re no longer here to enjoy it? Your soul doesn’t benefit at all.
This is not to say that work, success, or ambition are meaningless. Rather, it’s to remind you that there must be more. If the daily grind was all there is—if the hustle and milestones were the point—then life would be tragically futile. In that case, dying young without achieving anything might make no difference at all. Because in the end, we all die! And if there’s nothing beyond that, all effort is in vain.
For we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance that we should live in them. (Ephesians 2:10)
You were made for more than societal achievements and personal success. God has placed eternal purposes in your heart—assignments that can only be discovered when you surrender to Him and make Jesus your Lord and Saviour. Because when all is said and done, only two questions will matter:
- Did you truly know and follow My Son, Jesus Christ?
- How did you use the gifts I entrusted to you for My glory and the good of others?
In the end, when you stand before God, the questions won’t be about your title, your résumé, or your reputation. They’ll be about your relationship with Jesus Christ and how you lived out your faith with what you were given.
So don’t get swept away by the busyness of life—your career goals, family plans, and dreams for the future. Slow down and seek your Creator. Ask Him, “Lord, why am I here?” “What do you want me to do for Your Kingdom?” It’s better to build an eternal legacy than to chase after everything and end up with nothing.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20)
