Chastity as a Lenten Offering: Surrendering Your Desires to Christ

chastity during lent writing with the 3 aspcts of lent

Lent is a season of sacrifice, a time to draw closer to Christ by surrendering the things that hinder our relationship with Him. Many people give up food, social media, or other comforts—but have you ever considered offering your desires in chastity to the Lord? Choosing chastity during Lent can be a powerful way to grow in holiness, deepen your faith, and allow God to purify your heart.

Chastity as a sacrificial offering

Chastity is more than just abstaining from sexual sin. It’s a virtue of purity, self-mastery, and love. It aligns our hearts with God’s design for sexuality and relationships. Practising chastity is not always easy, especially in a culture that promotes instant gratification, but Lent calls us to self-denial for a greater good.

Jesus Himself said, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23).

Choosing chastity, even when difficult, is a way of carrying our Cross and offering our hearts completely to Christ.

How chastity draws you closer to Jesus

Chastity is a path to deeper intimacy with God. When we surrender our desires to Him, we acknowledge that our bodies and hearts belong to Him first.

You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your bodies- (1 Corinthians 6:20).

Practising chastity during Lent helps us to:

  • Strengthen our prayer life – Turning to God for grace in moments of temptation fosters a deeper dependence on Him. The struggle for purity leads us to the foot of the Cross, where we learn to trust in His mercy and love.
  • Grow in self-control – By disciplining our thoughts and actions, we cultivate a heart focused on Christ rather than fleeting desires. Chastity teaches us patience and perseverance, virtues that extend into all aspects of our spiritual journey.
  • Experience true freedom – Instead of being ruled by passions, we learn to love rightly and purely in a way that honours God. When we surrender our desires to Christ, we find peace, knowing His plan for love is far greater than the world’s counterfeit promises.
  • Become a witness to others – Living a pure life can be a powerful testimony in a culture that often misunderstands chastity. It shows that love is not about self-gratification but about willing the good of another.

Practical ways to live chastity during lent

Lent is a time of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, and these practices can help us embrace chastity more fully.

Fast from impurities

Fasting is not only about food. It’s also about removing anything that clouds our hearts and minds. This Lent, consider fasting from impure influences that may lead you away from chastity. Avoid TV shows, music, books, and social media accounts that promote lustful content. Be mindful of the conversations you engage in and the environments you place yourself in. If certain situations or relationships tempt you to compromise your commitment to chastity, step away from them. Instead, immerse yourself in wholesome activities that uplift your soul—read Scripture, listen to edifying music, and surround yourself with content that leads you closer to Christ.

Deepen your prayer life

Chastity is not simply a matter of willpower. It requires grace, which is found in prayer. Make this Lent a time of deepening your relationship with God. Pray the Rosary, especially the Sorrowful Mysteries, meditating on Christ’s sacrifice and how His suffering redeems us. Spend time in Eucharistic Adoration, offering your struggles to Jesus, and allow His presence to strengthen you. Regularly receive the Sacrament of Confession (CCC 1425-1426) to be cleansed of sin and renewed in grace. Prayer transforms the heart, giving you the strength to remain steadfast in chastity.

Seek accountability and community

Don’t be a lone ranger on this journey. Surround yourself with friends who support your commitment to purity and encourage you in virtue. If you find yourself struggling, seek out a mentor or spiritual director who can guide you and offer wisdom. Join a Catholic group or online community that upholds your values and provides encouragement. The journey is easier when you have others walking alongside you, holding you accountable and reminding you of your higher calling.

Give alms through acts of love

True love is self-giving, not self-seeking. Use this Lenten season to cultivate authentic relationships built on respect, virtue, and selflessness. Serve others in ways that do not seek personal gratification but instead aim for their good. Be present for your family, reach out to friends in need, and practise small acts of kindness. This is a way to give alms—not just materially, but through love that mirrors Christ’s own sacrificial love.

The rewards of surrendering chastity to Christ

Living chastely is not about restriction but about freedom and joy. It purifies our hearts, helping us to love as God intended.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8)

This promise is not just for eternity—it is for now. When we live chastely, our vision becomes clearer, our relationships become healthier, and our souls become more attuned to God’s presence.

Through this Lenten offering, you are not just giving up something. You’re gaining a deeper union with Christ, a renewed sense of self-worth, and a heart free to love as God designed.

Make chastity a lifelong offering

Remember that chastity is not just for this season. It’s a lifelong journey of love and holiness. The grace you receive during this time can strengthen you beyond Easter, helping you to continue surrendering your desires to Christ daily.

Trust that God sees your sacrifice, honours your efforts, and will pour His grace upon you. Chastity is not just about what you are giving up. It’s about who you are becoming in Christ. Will you offer this part of your heart to Him today?
